Students at Roy G. Eversole Elementary recently had the opportunity to learn more about the history of their community.

Emily Hudson, Executive Director of the Southeast Kentucky African-American Museum and Cultural Center, visited RGE to present a Black History Month lesson to our 3rd and 4th grade students about Mrs. Ovetta Basey, a respected educator who served the Hazard community for more than 40 years.

Mrs. Basey began teaching at Liberty School before the integration of schools in the late 1950s. Throughout her career, she was known for her leadership and commitment to helping students succeed. Her influence on education in Hazard was so meaningful that Roy G. Eversole Elementary dedicated its library in her honor in 2006.

During the presentation, students learned about Mrs. Basey’s accomplishments as an educator and community leader, as well as the role Liberty School played in educating African-American students in Hazard prior to integration. The lesson helped students better understand the history of our community and the people whose dedication helped shape opportunities for future generations.

Younger students also had the opportunity to participate in meaningful learning connected to this important history. RGE librarian Kasey Combs led lessons with our Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade students about the importance of honoring history and recognizing the individuals who help shape our community.

Students also had the opportunity to see Mrs. Basey’s legacy represented within the school. A hallway mural outside the library (originally painted in 2006) was recently revitalized with the help of local artist Jenn Amburgey, bringing new life to this important tribute.

As students walk the same hallway where Mrs. Basey’s legacy is honored, they are reminded that the story of education in Hazard is built on the dedication of teachers who believed deeply in their students and their community.

Roy G. Eversole Elementary is proud to continue that legacy each day as our students learn, grow, and write the next chapter of our school’s story.
